Lecture Topic: One Maine Company, Countless Civil War Stories
Inspired by a Civil War diary left behind by his great-great-grandfather, Company D began as a personal research project and has grown into an ongoing narrative history podcast exploring the lives of Maine soldiers and the families they left behind.
During the lecture, Snell shares highlights from years of archival research — stories of ordinary men caught up in extraordinary circumstances. The presentation examines how a single company from Maine reflects the broader experience of the Civil War: courage and fear, survival and loss, and the lasting impact of war on generations of families.
Attendees will also get a behind-the-scenes look at how these stories are uncovered through diaries, pension files, census records, and local archives — and why preserving them still matters today.

About Company D
Company D is a narrative history podcast exploring the lives of soldiers from Maine’s Third Infantry Regiment and the families they left behind. Drawing on diaries, letters, pension files, census records, and local archives, the project preserves personal histories often lost in traditional battlefield accounts.
Each episode tells the story of one soldier — not just how they fought, but how they lived, what they endured, and what became of them after the war.
