When he was a schoolteacher in Bath, Maine, Josiah A. Temple became the paid substitute for former Company D Captain William Watson. Temple fought for the Seventeenth Maine Infantry Regiment, getting shot at the Battle of Mine Run.

He went on to become a lawyer and a judge, a self-righteous reformer, who was forced to move around the country as his legal and ethical lapses caught up with him. He became a candidate for the Minnesota Supreme Court with the Midroad Populist Party–preaching abstinence and self-control.

But his life of self-delusion collapsed around him with charges of fraud and abuse.

Meet the Substitute and a man plague by his own demons in Episode 09, “The Intolerant Life of Josiah Temple.” Listen to the trailer today and the full episode on January 28.
