Moses O. Craft was a rising star. Then a bullet at Bull Run shattered his knee.
Sometimes the war follows you home.

In the first battle of the American Civil War, the Battle of Bull Run, the Third Maine Infantry Regiment was rushed onto the battlefield at Henry House Hill.
The battle was already lost. Union troops were retreating. Confederate artillery and infantry fire were breaking apart Union lines.
Amid this chaos, 40-year-old Sergeant Moses O. Crafts was felled by a musket shot through his right knee. In order to escape capture, he was piggybacked off the battlefield by his company lieutenant.
Those few minutes ended the military career of a man renowned for his patriotism and loyalty to Republican politics.
Moses would spend the rest of his life trying to hold together his health, his livelihood, his family, and his legacy. Sometimes the war follows you home.
