Captain William H. Watson was the second captain of Company D of the Third Maine Infantry. Ambitious and confident, he believed he deserved a promotion to major.

He was so certain he would receive it that he resigned his captaincy before the appointment was even made. The promotion never came.

Instead, Watson’s resignation was accepted, and he returned home a civilian.

Imagine his surprise when, in the summer of 1863, he was drafted back into the Army.
