Three Maine Brothers on opposite sides of the American Civil War

TWO BROTHERS LIVED IN MAINE. THE THIRD WORKED ON A LOUISIANA SLAVE PLANTATION

John A. Couillard moved to Louisiana as a young man and worked as a clerk for Maine native Samuel Bowman, who owned a slave plantation along the Tensas River in Louisiana. When the American Civil War started in 1861, John’s two brothers back home in Maine, James and Charles, volunteered with Company D of the Third Maine Infantry Regiment.

John Couillard had a choice. He chose to volunteer with the Confederate Army, joining the Sixth Louisiana Infantry Regiment.

The three Coulliard brothers would face off on the same battlefield at Fredericksburg.
