No War is Civil, But a Podcast Can Be

History that is Raw, Riveting, and Real

NEW PODCAST ON THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR LAUNCHES ON SEPTEMBER 17

The American Civil War wasn’t just fought by politicians and generals—but by everyday men and their families. On September 17, Company D launches, bringing you a narrative history podcast that uncovers the war one soldier at a time. Our mission is simple: to uncover and share the forgotten stories of ordinary men caught in extraordinary times.

“Our regiment held the peach orchard till the last part of the afternoon, when we was drove back. We fell back under a heavy fire. We rallied again in the area, fixed bayonets, and made a charge and drove the Rebels out of the orchard again.”

Charles F. Snell, Civil War Diary, Battle of Gettysburg, July 2, 1863

Through careful research and vivid storytelling, each episode explores the sacrifices, rivalries, and resilience of Company D of the Third Maine Infantry Regiment. This is microhistory at its finest—personal stories that reveal the human side of a war too often reduced to generals, maps, and dates. We tell the real stories–raw and riveting.

Company D is written, produced and hosted by George F. Snell III, with sound design and editing by Jay Brewer. The podcast was inspired by the Civil War diary of George’s great-great-grandfather, Charles F. Snell—a teenage corporal in Company D. His handwritten words—spare, immediate, and deeply human—captured the everyday struggles of a young soldier in the midst of war. Those diaries lit the spark for this project: to preserve and share the voices of men like Charles who might otherwise be forgotten.
